The Journey at Ardglen

The Journey 1st Anniversary

Our Story

The communities of Ardglen and Orenda, are challenged communities within Brampton.  In May 2012, Pastor Jamie Holton, from North Bramalea United Church (NBUC), toured the Ardglen community.  That experience moved him to start a community outreach.  Then on January 23, 2013 Kesean Williams was shot and killed in his living room as he sat in front of the TV.  The unit in which he lived is just meters away from the front door of The Journey.  That event became the catalyst for NBUC to move from visiting the neighbourhood to moving into the neighbourhood.  As a result, The Journey was established and opened on November 21, 2013.

Our Vision

The Journey exists to transform the Ardglen/Orenda communities by bringing hope to its residents and helping children, youth and families to take positive steps in their lives.  This vision is realized by:

  • Running a variety of programs
  • Upgrading and renewal of the properties
  • Advocating with the landlord

The Journey is a collaborative partnership with the residents of Ardglen/Orenda, Brampton Safe City, Community-in-Action Committee, Queen Kennedy Neighbourhood Team, Habitat for Humanity and North Bramalea United Church.  The Journey receives funding from multiple sources including the United Way, Presbyteries of Toronto Conference, Ontario Trillium Foundation and NBUC.

What We Are Doing

The Journey has started with a number of programs aimed at children and families.  These have included: a homework club; Kidzone; group violin lessons; community potlucks; cooking classes; painting apartment units; summer day camp; parenting classes and special events and trips.  And, this is just the start of programming that is aimed at transforming the community.
