NBUC is blessed with a vibrant and active youth ministry. On Sunday Mornings the Junior High and Sr High classes meet during the 11am service. On Communion Sundays (usually the first of the month) the youth stay in the service for Big Church Sunday and the focus is on participation, with youth helping serve communion, take up the offering, greeting at the doors and volunteering in the Children’s ministries.

Wednesday nights the youth group meets from 6:30 to 8:30. Most Wednesday nights the youth group takes part in a program called Intersect which is focused on providing a safe space for teens to build connections to God, to adult mentors, and to each other. The night starts with a time to hang out in the youth room, playing ping pong or video games, catching up on each other’s week, and grabbing a snack from the Candy Counter. We then have some games which get everyone moving and having fun. Then we go to the lower worship hall for a talk where our Youth Ministry Lead, or a guest uses humor, media and creative speaking to help the youth learn more about God and how faith impacts their everyday lives. The highlight of the evening is small group, where youth get a chance to connect with an adult leader and a few other kids their age to talk about their week, discuss the teaching and pray and care for each other. We wrap everything up by 8:30.

The last Wednesday of every month we do a special event where youth and leaders get to bond by having fun through a variety of activities. Previous activities have included retreats, lock-ins, paintballing, battle archery, trampolining, and much more. These events are a great opportunity for youth to bring out friends and have them get to know the youth and leaders in a relaxed and fun environment.

NBUC has a passion for serving God and the community, and our youth are very involved in a variety of service projects and volunteer opportunities. During the summer many of our youth volunteer as leaders in our Children’s Camp and Vacation Bible School and during the school year they take part in activities such as serving breakfast at Regeneration, raising money through the 30 Hour Famine, and helping serve meals at our monthly Super Serve. We are always eager to help Youth find their place to serve, and are willing to sign forms for youth needing volunteer hours for school or other programs.

If you want to know more about the youth ministry at NBUC feel free to contact Brian Pengelly at bpengelly@nbuc.ca Brian sends out a weekly email with updates on youth events and opportunities, if you want to be included email him and ask to be added to the youth mailing list.

Encounter 2016 is our annual youth retreat where we get together with youth from other United Churches in the Southwest Presbytery. This year the retreat will be at Camp Medeba in West Guilford. We will be travelling by bus, which will leave the NBUC parking lot at 4:30 Friday April 29th and returning around 4pm Sunday May 1rst. The retreat is a great time to connect with other youth and to grow in your faith. Activities available this year will include ropes course, archery, ziplining, rock climbing, and much more. Space is limited to 80 youth so please get your registration forms as soon as possible. The cost is $95 per youth due to the generous subsidy of the Southwest Presbytery. Further scholarships are available to youth who need them. Please contact Brian Pengelly at bpengelly@nbuc.ca for more details.
